Update on FirstLife

Hello everybody,
this is just a short notice about my life and what change in the last couple of months. I know I haven't blogged a lot about my private life lately but there have been quite a few big changes and all are great.
First Désirée and I married in June 2006. Désirée is the greatest wife in the world and I have to deeply thank her for all her love.
We had a great time at Gut Georgenberg for the church wedding with roughly 100 guests and a nice small marriage ceremony at Baltrum.
And last November started another exiting time, since we are expecting a baby in July. It is a amazing to see him grow and develop over this 9 months and we hope the best for the delivery.
Besides this private changes a couple of "work" changes occurred:
In May 2006 I started my MBA at the Open University Business School and so far I am very happy with it. Currently I take the Strategy course and the bunch of people in my study group here from Munich are also very nice. There are 1,5 more years to go and it takes a lot of time to do this, but the learning experience is good and I learned a lot. So I can highly recommend both, doing and MBA (if you haven't studied business already) and going for the Open University.
After three good years at Jato Consulting I decided to see the inner workings of another IT company. After looking at a couple of companies my choice fell on iteratec. It is a nice 80 person company with lots of technical and business expertise and a good atmosphere. They are doing very good with customers and employees alike. Hopefully I will find the time to blog a bit about my work here. :)
This was the update on my FirstLife, at least the big "new and noteworthy" things.

Hommingberger Gepardenforelle

The german magazine for computer and technology - c't - has started a competition about the phrase "Hommingberger Gepardenforelle".
The competition is about getting the best rank in google.de at the 10th of may and the 15th december, both at 11 o'clock GMT -1.
I think it is a funny competition since a couple of days ago merely one page was listet for this phrase. Just a few days later you hit half a million pages for this phrase. Amazing.
I wonder where this will lead.
There even exists already a page at Wikipedia.
I wonder if I get listed with this, if google might delete all sites with this special phrase (Hommingberger Gepardenforelle has no real meaning at all), and who the winner will be.
Maybe I have to set up my own link farm, just to get google to believe, that my site is the real home of the this Hommingberger Gepardenforelle. For those none native speakers either have a look at leo.org or read on:

Hommingberger means that the origin is from the small village of Hommingberg
Gepard means cheetah
and forelle means trout

So, all in all, it is a special fish from the middle of nowhere called Hommingberg, which looks like a mixture of trout and cheetah (Gepardenforelle).
I wonder when the first pictures of this creature will appear.

How-To: Diplomarbeit

Kurz nachdem ich meine eigene Diplomarbeit online gestellt habe, stiess ich auf den iX Artikel "Diplomarbeiten schreiben und publizieren" und wurde dadurch angeregt.
In dem Artikel werde einige Tips gegeben und die Linksammlung am Ende des Artikels ist sehr gut. Als weitere Ressourcen kann ich euch folgendes empfehlen:

• verschiedene Bücher zum Thema Diplomarbeit zumindest mal anlesen und reinschauen
  
• Diplomarbeiten normgerecht verfassen ist besuchenswert, da es hier eine Musterdiplomarbeit gibt, welche die entsprechenden DIN Normen erfüllt. Wusste selber nicht, dass es solche Normen gibt. Darüber hinaus ist es für Microsoft Word Freunde eine gute Vorlage zur Erstellung. Ich selber habe es als Vorlage benutzt.
  
• Recherche in Fachdatenbanken, wie Sie bei E-Fellows.net (als Stipendiat) angeboten werden
  
• Konferenzbände zum Thema durchblättern (sind meistens in der Unibibliothek vorhanden)
  
• meine Diplomarbeit zum Thema "A Web-based Medical Image Database System"
  
• mein Diplomarbeitsvortrag (TODO)

Squashen in München

Squashen ist einer meiner Lieblingssportarten, weil er wahnsinnig schnell ist und man so richtig gemein sein kann bzw. sogar muss. Am aktivsten habe ich den Sport in Singapur betrieben, da es dort auf dem Campus kostenlose Courts gab und sie in nur 2 minuten von meinem Zimmer aus zu erreichen waren. Hier in Deutschland ist es zwar nicht einer der billigsten Sportarten, aber fast alle Sportzentren bieten Studentenermässigungen an. Bisher getestet habe ich die folgenden:

New Weblogstyle

Just did some minor cosmetics on my website, including one header on all pages. This gives a better structure and helps in navigating through my pages.
A lot of things are still not finished. And a common footer is needed as well, but now I am familiar with the settings in MovableType and everything should go smoother now.
How do you like the changes? How do you like my new logo? My girlfriend created it for me, since she is much better with image/Photoshop stuff.

Scottys Herkunft geklärt

Nachdem ich schon über den Fund von einem Skorpion in unserer Wohnung und der Abgabe von Scotty berichtet habe, kommt heute endlich die Aufklärung über die Herkunft des Skorpiones und wie der kleine Skorpion es zu uns nach München geschafft hat.
Das Zoologischen Institut der LMU, München, hat uns unterrichtet, dass Scotty wohl vom Balkan oder Kaukasus kommt und zwar einen Giftstachel besitzt, der Skorpion aber eher zu schwach ist, diesen durch die Haut eines Menschen zu bohren. Puh, Glück gehabt. Ausserdem ist es eher unwahrscheinlich, dass wir noch mehr davon hätten.
So ist im Moment unsere Vermutung, dass er ins Auto gekrabbelt ist, als Désirée vor 3 Wochen in Kroatien war und sich dann in Ihrem Gepäck versteckt hat.
Im zoologischen Institut sitzt er nun in einem kleinen Terrarium und freut sich seines Lebens im schönen Deutschland. :)
Vielleicht werden wir ihn dort einmal besuchen gehen.

Scotty the Scorpion, Teil 2

Heute hat unser kleiner süsser Skorpion Scotty ein neues Zuhause gefunden im Zoologischen Institut der LMU, München.
Leider war der kompetente Prof. Dr. R. Hoffmann nicht verfügbar, aber so werden wir am Donnerstag wieder in der Kaulbachstr. vorbeischauen bzw. anrufen.
Dann wird das Geheimnis um unseren Skorpion vielleicht doch noch gelöst.

Brauner Skorpion

Gestern Nacht haben wir bei uns im Badezimmer einen kleinen braunen Skorpion entdeckt. UUaaaaaahhhhhh! Nachdem wir uns von dem Schrecken erholt hatten, haben wir den kleinen erstmal in eine Platikdose gefangen genommen und uns dann ängstigend (Gibt es noch mehr Skorpione in unserer Wohnung?) schlafen gelegt. Bis jetzt ist uns völlig unklar, wie ein Skorpion es schafft mitten in München (also kaltes Deutschland) in den dritten Stock zu kommen. Leider ist heute auch noch Feiertag (Pfingstmontag), so dass wir nirgends anrufen können oder das Tier irgendjemandem zeigen könnten. Da wir nicht einmal genau wissen was ein Skorpion zum Essen haben muss, haben wir im etwas Speck und Käse in seine Plastikbox getan. Auch wenn das wohl nicht so ganz seiner gewohnten Nahrung entsprechen dürfte. Im Moment hoffen wir nur, dass es nicht noch mehr davon in unserer Wohnung gibt.
Vielleicht können wir unseren "Scotty the Scorpion" gewinnbringend an eine Zoologische Handlung übergeben.

Da ich ja ein begeisterter Bücherwurm bin und nun auch doch schon über das ein ein oder andere Buch Rezensionen geschrieben habe, habe ich ich mich nun für das Partner Programm von Amazon.de beworben und wurde auch akzeptiert. Von nun an gelangt man von meinen jeweiligen Buch Rezensionen direkt zu Amazon. Auch habe ich angefangen mir dort eine Wunschliste als auch Lieblingslisten anzulegen. Auch die Webservices von Amazon klingen interessant, aber bis ich mal dazu komme die einzubauen dauert wohl noch ein bisschen. Oder hat jemand Vorschläge dazu?

it is all done

Finally I made it. Since my old webhoster simply vanished, I found a new one: Webspace4All. I am very happy with the price and service and I managed to move my Movable Type installation from the old server to the new one and simply setting some pathes and that was it. During this server changes I recognized that Movable Type is moving to version 3.0 and that they limit the auther for the free version to one author. This is a pity, so I hope this version is running good as hell to keep me satisfied with it, so that I do not have to pay.
Now I can happily start blogging again. There is a lot on my list and in my mind but up to now I couldn't find the time for it.
But the weekend is coming and the server config stuff is all done, so life is great again ;)

New webhoster needed!!!!

aaaahhhhhhhh!!!!!
just got an email from my webhoster, that they will close down. damn.
now I have to change my provider but I do not want to. they were damn cheap and offered a lot. Maybe that is the reason why they have to shut this down?
anyone knows a cheap and good provider?????

Memento

Grad habe ich mir den Film Memento angeschaut und ich muss sagen, dass er sehr gut ist, wobei er auch sehr verwirrend ist.
Der Hauptdarsteller hat sein Kurzzeitgedächtnis verloren. Und muss sich immer alles aufschreiben und fotografieren. Das Problem ist, dass er den Mörder seiner Frau sucht und umbringen will. Ohne Gedächtnis ist es nur schwer möglich und grad zum Schluss endet der Film für mich etwas unklar. Wer hat da wen gegeneinander ausgespielt? Teddy, Natalie und Leonard sind sehr undurchsichtig und der Plot ist so, als wenn jeder gegen jeden intrigiert.
Sehr verwirrend. Aber der Stil hat mir gefallen. Man sieht ganz am Anfang den Schluss und dann immer wieder Szenen, die in der Zeit zurückgehen. Bis man quasi am Anfang der Episode ist.
Da aber Widersprüche in der Darstellung auftreten, weiß man gar nicht wer jetzt recht hat und an was man glauben soll, aber vielleicht ist das auch der große Sinn des Filmes, das man sich immer seine Scheinwelt aufbaut in der alles stimmig sein muss.
Na ja, wieder mal was zum nachdenken und vielleicht muss man den Film einfach noch mal anschauen, damit man ihn versteht.

21 Grams

Tuesday is movie day at least in the village cinemas in Melbourne so we went to the movies this night. And watched "21 grams".
To begin with the conclusion: this film is great. It is very sad, but great and I liked it very much. It makes you think a lot. Its about three men (or couples) and the connection between them.
One of them hits the other in a car accident and kills him. But this saves the live of the third one who needed a heart donation.
The film reflects different extreme situations in life and what living is worth. 21 grams.
I did not like the many timeshifts in it, but I guess after Pulp Fiction got popular with this every film copies it.
Nevermind. All in all I can recommend this movie. It made me think a lot about life and the deeper meaning of it.

Simpson Archive

Just came across the Simpson Archive where you can find all the answers you want to know about my beloved Simpsons.
Actually the Simpsons is the only TV show that I watch and I think can watch forever.
It is just the problem, that I have seen most of them already at least twice so it gets a bit boring, but anyway the jokes are great and the plots outstanding.
Looking forward to make a Simpson video night in Germany, when I am back home.

Midsumma Melbourne

Today we went to the biggest queer gettogether in Melbourne, the Midsumma Carneval 2004. Since I went there with Ralf and Juri we made a good appearence as gay lovers ;)
It was really amazing to see the gay and lesbian community, a lot styled and it was a bit like "schaulaufen" as we say in German. But we enjoyed it and saw some nice dancing and singing performances. I felt a bit like being at a CSD in Germany. And I already look forward to go on the next CSD, since it is very interesting to watch the community and how most of them know each other and how many of them dress up. And for a heterosexual it is interesting to look and some of the behaviour is really different.

Surfing at Point Leo

Today we went surfing at Point Leo which is about 1 hour drive from the eastern suburbs of Melbourne.
The weather today was very good, a bit too good actually, since it was damn hot and nearly no wind. So it was not the best weather for surfing, but anyway we went there, got a couple of cheap boards for hire and took of into the water.
The waves were very strange and coming seldom and irregular so we had not a lot of fun out there. I managed at least to catch two white water waves. At least something.
After that we went home and now my nipples hurt form the paddling on the board. Autsch.
The rest of the day we just hang out around here. What a lovely Saturday. ;)

Nudeln mit Zuccini (4 personen)

Ein leckeres Rezept, welches die Eva öfters gekocht hat und sehr, sehr lecker ist und dabei auch noch sehr schnell gemacht ist:

500g Nudeln
1 Zwiebel in Olivenöl anbraten
500g Zucchini klein schneiden und zu den Zwiebeln in eine Pfanne geben
2 Brühwürfel zerbröseln und in die Pfanne rein
200g Schmand
mit Salz, Pfeffer und Knoblauch würzen

Ich kann mich kaum sattessen, so lecker ist es.

w.blogger is a nice tool

This is my first blog with the w.bloggar tool and I must admit that I like the comfortable way of adding links, color, bold, etc. Although I have DSL connection I think it is nice to blog offline and just let it connect for the updates.
The only feature I miss is to edit templates of my Movabletype installation. This would be awesome.
From now on, you can look forward to some styled entries.
